I love this series, I keep hitting the order button on my Kindle and getting the next book in the series. Lily Bard is a complicated, difficult, misanthropic woman with a tragic past, but like her sister you eventually want her to start getting back on with her life. Fortunately in book 3 and even more now in book 4 she starts to do just that. What has been bothering me in this series is how inconsistent Charlaine Harris is with details, and how her editors didn't catch them. In book 1 her only sister's name is Varena, then in book 2 it's Serena, then in book 3 it's back to Varena. In book 3 (I think) Lily's 'gift' to Jack is to get an implant so they can safely have unprotected monogamous sex, but in book 4 she mentions how the infection after her rape burned out her reproductive organs. I can't remember the other ones, but there were several other ones where I thought "wait, what? That's not right."
To me those really big details need to be caught before going to print. I don't at all expect Charlaine Harris could keep every detail straight in her head - I'm sure she goes back and forth through the writing process and can't keep track of all her characters in all her series - but that's why she has editors. For such a great author, I'd expect her to have a really great editor, and it's jarring and pulls a reader out of the series.
I didn't put this review in for the 1st book because, among other things, these are details that give away the plot - but also because it's more of a review about a few specific aspects (for other fellow readers, or Ms Harris' editors!) rather than a review to help someone decide whether to read the series.

customers should line up for this novel as they have for the first three.
What always amazes me is how Charlaine Harris gives us main characters who are female and hold pedestrian occupations (i.e. Lily is a cleaning woman and Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress) and yet men can identify and root for them without any gender bias.
In this book, Lily (as always)ends up involved in the middle of a murder mystery and in her own unique way finds a way to help triumph in the end. Where Sookie holds all sorts of supernatural powers, all Lily has is her common sense and her expertise in Tai Chi. God bless her, she is fun to read about.Shakespeare's Trollop (Lily Bard Mysteries, Book 4)
As a woman I hated this book and could not even finish it. The way she describes and talks about the victim is just plain sexist and cruel. Because the victim had a number of sexual partners and clearly liked sex and male company she was a slut and a whore. That she only partook in this kind of behaviour to please the men and she had low self esteem and did not value herself. I call BS on this especially coming from a female writer and the fact that the female protagonist in this book also has no respect for the victim or the victims partners is hard to swallow too. I had really enjoyed the first two books about a strong, independent female protagonist over coming a tragic event in her life but I am done now with this series.
I began to read this series because I really enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire series and so I thought this would be another good series to read. It is. These Books are quick to read and if you are a fan of the stackhouse books you will meet Lily Bard as a character in "Dead as a Doornail". It's just a small part but it's nice to be reminded of her character.
Lily Bard is as different from Sookie as you could find, but there are similarities to there basic characters.
I took all five of the books in this series as something light to read on the plane to and from California and for the week I was there. It was a great series to read and I left them for my daughter in law to read as she picked up the first book when I had finished it. Both her and my son enjoyed the books. They are great to read in airports, Dr. appointments, and times when you need that little something to keep you entertained while you are hurry up and waiting.
For someone who doesn't like to get involved in other people's affairs, Lily Bard seems to have a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In book #4 of Charlaine Harris' superb Lily Bard mystery series, Lily discovers lifelong Shakespeare resident Deedra Dean murdered inside a car parked in a woodsy area outside of town. Lily quickly becomes a suspect when it is discovered that Deedra died of a severe blow to the chest - a blow that could only have been delivered by a martial arts expert. The sheriff becomes even more suspicious regarding her involvement when Deedra's mother asks Lily to help her clean Deedra's apartment, but Lily is determined not to get involved this time and fully intends to leave the case in Sheriff Marta Schuster's capable hands. However, Deedra's notoriously promiscuous lifestyle provides an extensive list of suspects, but very few clues. Much as Lily disliked Deedra in life, she feels that she has no choice but to resume the role of amateur detective and join the investigation.
Once again, a fabulous book from the superb author, Charlaine Harris. With every book Lily Bard and the other characters who reside in Shakespeare become more fleshed out and more entertaining. Lily is really starting to develop into a real person again after being violently assaulted years before and it is fun to see her change. I thought that the mystery plot this time was wonderful and had a nice little surprise twist at the end. For anyone who enjoys mysteries, I cannot recommend this series enough!
